Tucked away in a rural corner of Carmarthenshire, Cilgwyn Wood is very easy to find from the town of Llandovery.
This peaceful woodland has a lovely mix of different trees, including large Douglas fir, old beech and spruce.
It is a small woodland with a short circular walking trail but there is lots to see all year round.
In spring, the banks beside the start of the walking trail are carpeted with bluebells.
On a hot summer’s day there are patches of dappled shade along the walking trail through the woodland and the scent of resin in the air.
If you visit in autumn, the beech trees are a riot of seasonal colour as the leaves change.
As the leaves start to fall in the colder months, they cover the walking trail with a crunchy carpet, just right for a bracing winter walk.
The walking trail is waymarked and starts on the forest road at the woodland entrance.
2 miles/3 kilometres, moderate
The Cilgwyn Walk is a circular waymarked trail which, although fairly short, has a steady 500 metre climb and some steep sections on the return.
It starts off on the forest road which climbs steadily and has far-reaching views over farmland. It then turns off onto a narrow grassy track through the woodland.
The track winds past beech trees and majestic conifers on a steady climb up to a pond and bench in a shady glade of beech trees.
The trail then crosses the forest road and goes alongside a bank of old beech trees, full of bluebells in spring, before dropping back down to the starting point on the forest road.
Cilgwyn Wood is three miles south west of Llandovery.
Car parking is free of charge.
Take the A4069 from Llandovery to Llangadog. After 1 mile turn left along an unclassified road signposted to Myddfai and continue for another mile. At the junction continue straight ahead and, after ½ mile, the entrance to Cilgwyn Wood is on the left just after Cilgwyn Manor Farm.
Car parking is in a small area at the woodland entrance.
Please park carefully, leaving the gateways clear for residents and emergency access.
Cilgwyn Wood is on Ordnance Survey (OS) map OL 12.
The OS grid reference is SN 744 297.
The nearest train station is in Llandovery.
