Caio Forest, near Llandovery
Peaceful upland woodland with several waymarked...
Two short riverside walks and a grassy picnic area
Situated in a remote part of mid Wales but easy to find, White Bridge car park and riverside picnic area is the starting point for two short walking trails in Irfon Forest.
Both trails are waymarked and follow the River Irfon on part of its journey down from the Cambrian Mountains to the River Wye at Builth Wells.
White Bridge is a few miles from Llanwrtyd Wells which claims to be the smallest town in Britain.
Don’t miss the Wash Pool back down the road towards Llanwrtyd Wells, where farmers once washed their sheep before shearing them.
The cascades above the pool can be dramatic after a lot of rain.
All of the walking trails are waymarked and start from White Bridge car park.
1¼ miles/1.9 kilometres, easy (there and back)
The Afon Irfon Walk follows a riverside path along the Afon Irfon and through a variety of woodlands before returning along the same path to the car park.
There are several boulders placed along the walk that you can sit on to rest awhile and enjoy the sights and sounds of the river.
Don’t miss the big Sitka spruce trees with their crusty plate bark.
1⅓ mile/2.2 kilometres, moderate
The Cwm Irfon Trail is a circular trail.
It follows the same riverside path as the Afon Irfon Walk but it turns away from the river when the hard surface stops and joins a quiet forest road.
There are views of the valley and the different types of woodland from the forest road which returns to the car park.
There are no steps on either walk.
White Bridge is three miles north west of Llanwrtyd Wells off the A483.
From the A483 at Llanwrtyd Wells follow signs for Abergwesyn. The White Bridge car park is on this road, before you reach Abergwesyn village.
Car parking is free of charge.
White Bridge is on Ordnance Survey (OS) map 187.
The OS grid reference is SN 856 507.
The nearest train station is in Llanwrtyd Wells.
