Types of change (variation) you can make to your permit
There are four different types of change that you can make to your permit: Administrative, Minor, Normal and Substantial. Each is described below. If you’re unsure what type of change you’re planning to make we recommend using our pre-application advice service for Environmental Permits
Administrative variation
For small corrections or changes to the permit, such as:
- name or address but where the legal entity has not changed
- National Grid Reference to improve accuracy
- typographical errors
- the start date of a permit
Minor variation
For changes which need some technical input from us, including applications to:
- Reduce the volumes being disposed of to land
- Reduce the frequency of disposal
- Reduce the number of disposal areas
As long as the changes don’t trigger the need for a new assessment of risk from the disposal activity. This will usually be because nothing has changed either on site or in the surrounding areas since the original environmental permit was issued.
Normal variation
For changes requiring technical input from NRW which is similar to a new application
- Reduce the volumes being disposed of to land
- Reduce the frequency of disposal
- Reduce the number of disposal areas
Where a new assessment of risk from the disposal activity is needed. This will usually be because something has changed either on site, in the surrounding areas, or our policies have changed since the original environmental permit was issued.
Substantial variation
Where a significant assessment is required, this would include:
- Applications to increase disposal volumes
- Applications to increase frequency of disposal
- Changes to the disposal location on the permit
As sheep dip is a groundwater hazardous substance these would require NRW to complete a new assessment of risk from the disposal.
