Sally Davies, Duty Tactical Manager Wales at Natural Resources Wales said:

Storm Claudia has had a huge impact on communities across Wales, particularly in Monmouthshire, and our thoughts are with everyone affected.
River levels on the Monnow reached record levels, exceeding those recorded during Storm Dennis in 2020 and Storm Bert last year.
The volume of rain flowing through the river has seen water overtop the banks, and has left much of Monmouth town centre and some surrounding communities under water. With a major incident declared, we are assisting partners with recovery efforts.
There are three Severe Flood Warnings in force on the River Monnow, and another on the River Wye at Monmouth. This means that there is a danger to life and we urge people to follow the advice of the emergency services on the ground.
A number of  Flood Warnings and Alerts are in force across Wales. While we expect the numbers to come down over the course of the day, we expect some of these to remain in place for some time as rainfall moves down the catchments, and rivers continue to respond. We urge people to check the latest flood warnings on our website where the pages are updated every 15 minutes.
While the rain has cleared, we are asking the public to stay safe and remain vigilant. Keep away from swollen riverbanks and do not to drive or walk through flood waters.
If you have been affected by flooding, our website has a wealth of information and links to services that can help people recover.
This includes information on financial support available, mental health support services and advice on how to clean your property safely. Visit naturalresources.wales/flooding.
