Natural Resources Wales calls for septic tank registration in Conwy
Homeowners in Conwy are being reminded of their legal duty to register septic tanks and small sewage treatment systems – a legal requirement since April 2010.
The registration of domestic foul treatment systems, such as septic tank and package treatment plants, helps Natural Resources Wales (NRW) monitor them, help prevent pollution, and protect local water quality and public health.
Despite the long-standing legal requirement, many properties in the area may still be unregistered. This lack of information makes it difficult to assess the environmental impact, but unregulated systems can pose serious risks. Untreated sewage from faulty or unmanaged tanks can contaminate groundwater, streams, and rivers – threatening wildlife and potentially affecting drinking water supplies.
Registration is free and straightforward for most households. If your property is not connected to the mains sewer and uses a septic tank or package treatment plant, you must register it with NRW. Systems that discharge to ground via a drainage field (soakaway) or to surface water must meet specific criteria to qualify for free registration.
To register, visit the NRW website and complete the online form: Register your septic tank. You’ll need to confirm details about your system’s location, discharge method, and proximity to protected areas or water sources.
Charlotte Williams, Environment Team Leader for NRW, said:
"Registering your foul waste systems is a simple but vital step in protecting Conwy’s environment. It helps us monitor potential risks and prevent pollution. We’re asking all property owners to check their systems and take action if needed."
If you're unsure whether your system is registered and eligible, or would like some assistance in registering, please contact NRW directly on 0300 065 3000.
