The role
You will work in NRW’s Strategic Projects Team to develop Strategic Nitrogen Action Plans (SNAPs) for key sites sensitive to atmospheric Nitrogen emissions, using modelled data on local sources of nitrogen pollution. This work aims to address the “Nature Emergency”, reverse biodiversity declines and build ecosystem resilience. The role involves working closely with NRW staff, Welsh Government and landowners.
As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to the nearest NRW office to your home and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.

About us
This work is being taken forward through the Nature Networks capital grants programme – a Welsh Government-funded programme aiming to improve the condition and management of protected sites throughout Wales. The programme is coordinated through Strategic Projects in Operations, but this role will work closely with the Environment Teams responsible for the protection of the identified key sites.
What you will do
- Work with NRW staff to identify which exemplar site to focus on in each Area.
- Use modelled source attribution data, that will have an element of complexity and be of a technical nature requiring degree level understanding, to identify which activities might be affecting each exemplar site.
- Meet local farmers and land managers to discuss potential options for N pollution reduction, identified by the officer using their expertise and knowledge, especially those funded by the Sustainable Farm Scheme.
- Produce a Site Nitrogen Action Plan for each exemplar site.
- Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post
- Be committed to Natural Resources Wales Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy, together with an understanding of how it operates within the responsibilities of the post
- Be committed to your own development through the effective use of your personal development plan (known as Sgwrs).
- Any other reasonable duties requested commensurate with the grade of this role.
Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills
In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method.
- Experience of nature conservation, biodiversity, protected sites & landscapes in marine or terrestrial environment.
- Experience of working with landowners and/or other stakeholders.
- Strong and effective self-management and organisational skills.
- The ability to influence, negotiate and gain cooperation of others. Experience of dealing successfully with difficult people / situations is important.
- Excellent communication and inter-personal skills with a customer focus.
- Excellent at building effective working relationship with colleagues and external partners.
- Ability to write clear, concise technical reports.
- The ability to use specialised IT systems, such as GIS or NRW customised applications.
- Able to work well as part of a team.
- Hold a current full UK valid licence to drive NRW fleet vehicles.
Welsh language level requirements
- Essential: Level A1 - Entry level (able to use and understand simple, basic phrases and greetings, no conversational Welsh)
- Desirable: Level B2 – Upper intermediate level (able to discuss work matters)
