Register as a battery producer
Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009 require an increasing proportion of portable batteries placed on the UK market to be collected for recycling.
The target for 2013 is 30%, reaching 45% by 2016. It also prohibits waste industrial and automotive batteries from going to landfill or incinerator.

Find out if you are a producer of batteries
If your business has a UK presence and puts batteries onto the UK market for the first time, then you are a producer. This includes batteries in appliances and vehicles. If you buy batteries from a UK supplier, you would not normally be considered a battery producer. Your specific obligations will vary depending on the type and amount of batteries you produce.
How to register as a battery producer
If you are a producer of portable batteries you will need to register, either with the Natural Resources Wales (small producers) or with a producer compliance scheme (large producers) who will act on your behalf. You must also register with the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) if you produce industrial or automotive batteries.
Large producer - portable batteries
If you place more than one tonne of portable batteries on the UK market each year you are a large producer. You must join a battery producer compliance scheme who'll arrange for collection, treatment and recycling of waste batteries on your behalf.

Small producer - portable batteries
If you place one tonne or less of portable batteries on the UK market you're classified as a small producer. You must register with us and provide annual data on the amount of portable batteries you have placed on the UK market.

Producers of industrial and automotive batteries
You must register online using the National Packaging Waste Database within four weeks of first placing any batteries on the UK market. Your registration will be with BIS.
What you need to do if you are a distributor
If you supply over 32kg of portable batteries each year you will be required to provide a take back service for waste portable batteries from end users.
