NRW asks for views on plan to manage Mynydd Du and Llanthony Forests for the next 10 years

View of Mynydd Du Forest

A ten-year plan to manage forests at Mynydd Du and Llanthony - near Crickhowell - has been put out for public consultation by Natural Resources Wales (NRW).

Respond to the consultation.

The main Mynydd Du Forest area fills both sides of the Grwyne Fawr Valley, which features sheltered woodland along the valley bottom, to high hill ground over 700 metres on its western flank. Llanthony Forest lies in an adjacent valley to the east and has a diverse chain of old estate woodlands, running along the western slopes of the Vale of Ewyas.

The plan aims to achieve several objectives including restoring ancient woodland in both forest blocks and carrying out strategic felling operations to establish permanent, diverse and resilient forests.

Brian Hanwell, Senior Land Manager for NRW said:
“This forest resource plan is interesting as it encompasses two contrasting forests - both of which are full of character.
“We want to make sure that our management plan for the forests benefits the local environment and habitats as well as local communities. To achieve that, it's vital that local people have their say on the plan, and comment on any way it could be improved.”

A summary of the main objectives for the forest and all the draft maps are available to view on the NRW consultation hub website.
