River Restoration Programme Advisor

The role

This role is part of NRW’s national River Restoration Programme and works across every aspect of the programme. This includes inputting to our ongoing strategy, planning and prioritisation to ensure we deliver multiple benefits via our restoration work. It also involves provision of best practice technical advice and guidance to projects internally and externally as well as preparation of evidence and ongoing communications. You will be part of the Freshwater Ecosystems and Fisheries Management team which sits in Natural Resources Management Policy. You will work across NRW with other staff in NRM Policy, Environment Teams and People and Places Teams as well as engaging with stakeholders. 

As an organisation we support flexible working.  You will be contracted to the nearest NRW office to your home and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.

What you will do

  • Prepare technical assessments, drawing on a range of information and data sources.
  • Support the preparation of material to inform the development of NRW, WG and other Partners policy, advice and guidance documents. Prepare the development of procedures, tools and guidance and lead the delivery of new ways of working.
  • Prepare material to inform advice to WG and other bodies in Wales.
  • Liaise with relevant NRW staff regarding interactions between teams to ensure the timely and effective delivery of project, policy or strategy obligations.
  • Project manage small evidence projects, in line with the agreed evidence programme.
  • Support engagement with sectors, partners, WG, water companies, eNGOs, JNCC and NE and WG.
  • Contribute to task and finish groups, commissioned through the Business Boards, to prepare defined products as required.
  • Collaborate with the Team Leader to develop and deliver an agreed Personal Development Plan.
  • Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post

Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills

In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method.

1. Knowledge of: Welsh, UK and EU legislation related to WFD, biodiversity and freshwater fisheries; Welsh, UK Government policy drivers in WFD, biodiversity and freshwater fisheries; and the issues and opportunities in Wales.

2. Experience of: technical analysis and interpretation of a range of environmental information and data.

3. Working with/in statutory nature conservation bodies, water companies, local authorities, eNGOs, and public bodies.

4. Working in a programme and project management environment with Project Management experience and/or qualifications. 

5. Share your knowledge and expertise to help solve problems, supporting all Heads of Business in EPP as required.

Welsh language level requirements

  • Essential: A1 - Entry level (able to use and understand simple, basic phrases and greetings, no conversational Welsh
