The red line shows flood defences that have been built to protect against flooding from rivers and the sea. Flood defences reduce, but do not completely stop the chance of flooding as they can be overtopped or fail.

These defences have different levels of protection, as shown in the Areas benefiting from flood defences map layer. The protection is also reflected in the High, Medium and Low flood risk areas on our map.

We will add flood defences and areas benefitting from flood defences to the map, as they become available.

Flood defences normally belong to the land owner and are either maintained:

  • privately
  • by Natural Resources Wales
  • by other Risk Management Authorities, such as your local authority

Defences that protect against the highest level of risk or will have the highest consequences if they fail will get priority for maintenance.
