This is a student work experience opportunity which is offered to help the student(s) to gain skills, knowledge and experience.

It allows the hosting team to share their knowledge and gain experience in working with young people whilst promoting NRW and the wider environmental sector.

Additional Information

What will you do

On the Sunday, you will join our staff based at Martin’s Haven on their patrol of Skomer Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). This will involve joining them on the boat where they will visit various sites within the MCZ to review activities within the MCZ.

On the Monday, you will join our staff on an opportunistic macroalgae survey of the Teifi estuary. You will observe tracking the perimeters of opportunistic macroalgal beds, take quadrats within the bed, estimating percentage cover and then you will take biomass recordings of the quadrat areas within the bed, which involves washing and weighing the algae.

On the Tuesday, you will repeat the opportunistic macroalgae survey but for the Nyfer estuary.

Please note, there will be very early starts required for these surveys.

Who will you be working with

You will be working with the Marine Monitoring, Assessment and Reporting Team in NRW; on the Sunday you will join the staff members based at Martin’s Haven, on the Monday and Tuesday you will join the Water Environment Regulations staff in the field.

Where will you be working

All field work carried out at:

  • Skomer MCZ (meeting at Martin’s Haven),
  • Teifi Estuary – meet at Cardigan or travel from Llandarcy Office,
  • Nyfer Estuary – meet at Newport, Pembs or travel from Llandarcy Office.

What other information is relevant to the placement

As stated above, you must be prepared for early starts, be comfortable on a boat (for the Sunday) and be prepared to work in wet and windy weather as the surveys will go ahead even if the weather isn’t dry.
