Accessing our data
We want to make access to our data as easy and transparent as possible to achieve maximum re-use.
We have two data categories:
Open Data is free data that anyone can view, re-use or re-publish provided that the original source is attributed. We make this data available under the Open Government Licence (OGL).
We are continuously publishing more of our data as Open Data to benefit communities, the environment and economy.
For some data, we have to restrict access due to legal or business reasons. These data are available under a conditional data licence.
How we share Open Data
1. Lle Geo-Portal
You can download our Open Data from the NRW data catalogue on Lle Geo Portal
‘Lle’ means ‘place’ in the Welsh language and is a hub for data and information related to Wales and the environment. It is a partnership between Welsh Government and NRW.
Keep up with the latest published data on Lle Geo-Portal by subscribing to our RSS feeds
2. Interactive web maps on NRW website
Some data are available to view on our Web Map Services
3. Live data API portal
Data developers can download our Open Data APIs from the Natural Resources Wales API Portal.
4. NBN Gateway/Atlas of Living Wales - Ecology data (Open and Restricted Data)
We currently publish most of our ecology data, such as species and habitats, through the NBN Gateway https://data.nbn.org.uk.
From April 2017, this will change to the Atlas of Living Wales. For more information please visit: https://nbn.org.uk/news/atlas-living-wales-update/.
‘NRW ecological data exempt from general release under EIR’ explains why some ecological data are restricted from general view.
How we share Restricted Data
These data are available under a licence that will specify conditions for re-use.
Apply for a licence to access Restricted Data

Licencing and supply of Restricted Data may take up to 20 working days
How to find out if data is open or restricted
You can find out if data is open or restricted, or search for data, by looking at our library catalogue. Select the search box on the left hand menu and click onto ‘dataset titles’.
