Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is urging Welsh businesses and organisations to check whether they meet the criteria and need to comply with the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) before the first deadline of 05 December 2015.
The scheme is mandatory for all companies with at least 250 employees, or that have an annual turnover of more than €50m (approximately £35m) or a balance sheet exceeding €43m (approximately £30m) – or if another part of their corporate group meets these criteria.
Qualifying organisations need to carry out an assessment of the energy used by their buildings, industrial processes and transport - to identify cost-effective energy-saving measures. These assessments then have to be undertaken every four years.
They then need to notify the Environment Agency that this assessment has been completed before the deadline, and before each four year period. Failing to do so could lead to civil penalties.
Iwan Hughes, Technical Specialist for NRW said:
“ESOS is a UK government scheme and we want to make sure the sites and businesses we work with in Wales do not get caught out and miss the deadline to comply.
“It affects all organisations and businesses which meet the criteria across the UK, and is administered by the Environment Agency in England. Our role here in Wales will be to monitor and make sure all relevant organisations are fulfilling their responsibilities.
“We’re urging organisations in Wales to start taking action now, if they haven’t already, and make sure they have undertaken their assessment and submitted their notification by 5 December.
"There is also an ESOS email helpdesk to support businesses and organisations in advance of the deadline.”
The scheme was introduced by UK Government under the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme regulations, which came into effect in July 2014. There are no fees payable for participation.
More information about the scheme, the criteria and what action needs to be taken is available on the Natural Resources Wales website.
Notify that you have complied.
Advice and support is available through the ESOS email help desk.
