Beautiful rivers and lakes

Our rivers and lakes have shaped our landscape, from Upland lakes such as Llyn Idwal and our large rivers like the Wye

They are so important to wildlife that many have been designated as Special Areas of Conversation under the Natura 2000 network of European protected wildlife sites.

Protecting our rivers and lakes not only means that the future of well-known species like the salmon or the otter are safeguarded for the future, but also for lesser known species such as the lamprey and freshwater pearl mussel.

The LIFE Natura 2000 Programme has produced costed action plans for every River and Lake Natura 2000 site in Wales, planning for the future and helping to obtain vital funds.
