A major, multi-agency exercise will take place in St Asaph on the 29th and 30th October to test how Natural Resources Wales (NRW), the emergency services and the local authority respond to a serious flood incident.
Over the course of the two days, officers will ‘act out’ a flood scenario, similar to the incident which caused hundreds of homes and businesses to flood in St Asaph in November 2012.
It will involve both a table-top exercise and live role play - including issuing Flood Alerts and Warnings, erecting demountable flood defences, testing out emergency evacuation procedures and testing the flood warden network and supporting community flood plans.
In total, the exercise will include officers from NRW, North Wales Police, North Wales Fire and Rescue, Denbighshire County Council, local flood wardens, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, Scottish Power and representatives from the Spring Gardens Caravan Park.
Tim Jones, North Wales Director of Operations, Natural Resources Wales said:
“The flooding in 2012 was devastating for people in St Asaph, destroying homes and businesses, damaging infrastructure and unfortunately ending with tragic consequences for one family.
“We’ve been working hard to support the community in the aftermath of the flooding, and to make sure the city is better prepared to cope with flooding in the future.
“We’ve already made huge headway in improving flood protection, but this exercise will be a vital test of the plans we’ve made, and how all the agencies involved come together to work quickly and efficiently to protect people in such an emergency.”
Following the event, in December NRW will hold a public drop in session for people to find out more information about its long term plans to reduce flood risk.
NRW are currently refining the best options before approaching Welsh Government for funding, following which they hope to design a scheme for construction in spring 2016.
The event will take place on Wednesday 10th December at the Oriel Hotel, St Asaph between 2pm and 7pm.
Filming opportunities: On Wednesday 29 October, at 11:30am, Natural Resources Wales officers will be erecting demountable flood defences along the River Elwy, near Spring Gardens bridge.
