Take a trip to the Wild Side

A new campaign is being launched urging families to make the most of the extra hour after clocks go back this weekend (Sunday 26 October).

The ‘Wales Wild Side’ campaign has been organised by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and kicks off by urging families to make the most of their extra hour over the school half-term by discovering Wales’ great outdoors.

NRW – along with many partners - manages a huge range of coastal and forest walks, nature reserves and cycle trails throughout Wales.

Most of these are free or low-cost and provide a great opportunity for families to get together and reconnect with nature – even close to city centres.

Ideas of ‘10 things to do in Wales this half term’ are being publicised on NRW’s social media sites.

1.         Enter our photography competition
2.         Geocaching – a treasure hunt for the digital generation
3.         Step away from the gadgets
4.         Have fun in the forest
5.         Get on your bike
6.         Be a Conker King or Queen
7.         Be a ‘twitcher’
8.         Get a fright at Garwnant Visitor Centre
9.         Go on a mini-beast hunt!
10.       Walk a mile of the Wales Coast Path

People are being asked to share their photos and #WalesWildSide #CymruCefnGwyllt experiences with NRW through Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook.

Catherine Smith, Director of External Relations and Communications for Natural Resources Wales, said:

“People who are physically active reduce their risk of developing major chronic diseases by up to 50 percent*.

“The Welsh environment is the perfect place in which to get active and there are some great activities going on throughout Wales this half-term week.

“This campaign is all about encouraging families to discover Wales’ wild side over their half-term break. We’ve got loads of great ideas on our Facebook page and we’d love for people to share their experiences with us.

“Developing healthy and active lifestyles from an early age increases the likelihood of us all being healthier in adult life.”
